Biography

I am originally from Ventnor, New Jersey (just outside of Atlantic City) and now live and teach in Charlottesville, Virginia. Before moving to Charlottesville, I taught philosophy at the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science in Mobile, Alabama. I now teach courses in American History, including the AP course and a research seminar on the Civil War at the St. Anne's - Belfield School. My wife Michaela is a Ph.D student in Neuroscience at the University of Virginia.

Over the past few years I've published articles and book reviews in both popular magazines and scholarly journals. I am currently working on two book-length projects. The first is an analysis of postwar commemorations and memory of the Battle of the Crater, which took place outside Petersburg, Virginia on July 30, 1864. I am also editing a collection of 262 letters written by Captain John C. Winsmith who served first in the 5th and later in the1st South Carolina Infantry. The letters cover the years between 1859 and 1864.

Interests

I enjoy spending time with my wife and two cats Jeb and Felix. When I am not reading or writing about the Civil War I am jogging, playing my bass guitar or just staring out the window.
